For students dreaming of earning a bachelor's degree, the journey doesn't have to begin at a university. Starting at San Jacinto College offers an affordable, supportive way to build an academic foundation, explore career interests, and prepare for the next step in their education.
But according to Dr. Rachel Garcia, associate vice chancellor of transfer/university partnerships at San Jac, the benefits extend well beyond tuition savings.
"Students can complete core coursework in a supportive setting while exploring majors and career interests," Garcia said. "Our smaller class sizes allow students to build meaningful relationships with faculty who serve as teachers, mentors, and advocates."
Those relationships can make a lasting difference. Faculty help students strengthen academic skills, while exploring career opportunities, and preparing for university-level coursework and future careers.
At San Jac, academic advisors work with students to identify their educational goals and develop a course plan aligned with their intended bachelor's degree. Students who identify a transfer destination can also receive information about university visits, scholarship opportunities, and other resources specific to that institution.
"Even if you're unsure about the major or university you want to pursue, use that educational planner anyway," Garcia said. "Transfer should not be secondary. It's a deliberate pathway to earning a bachelor's degree."
Early planning can help students balance challenging prerequisite courses with general education requirements, understand university admission expectations, and avoid taking unnecessary credits.
San Jac maintains partnerships with universities throughout Texas, including the University of Houston-Clear Lake, Texas State University, Lamar University, Texas A&M University, and others. These partnerships help students navigate transfer requirements and, in some cases, provide coordinated advising, access to university resources, and clearly defined degree pathways.
Students also have access to transfer events, university representatives, campus visits, and workshops covering admission requirements, degree plans, financial aid, and scholarships.
For students still exploring their options, San Jac offers academic advising and career exploration resources to help them identify their interests while making progress toward their educational goals.
Whether students know exactly where they want to transfer or are still discovering their direction, Garcia encourages them to stay engaged and take advantage of the support available.
"Make appointments with faculty and advisors to discuss transfer goals and coursework," Garcia said. "Stay engaged, ask questions, seek guidance, and take advantage of the resources available."
With affordable tuition, personalized support, and established university partnerships, San Jac offers students more than a place to begin their college education. It offers a foundation for the opportunities ahead.
